Water
The Earth is known as "the water planet"
because it has 14,108 cubic kilometers of water. Although,
97.5% of this water on earth is salt water, present
in the sea. Most of the remaining fresh water is locked
up in the polar ice caps or is below as groundwater.
Therefore, we can freely access only the water in lakes
(0.007%) in rivers (0.002%). Of these, lakes are the
best "available freshwater source on the Earth's
surface." Lakes are valued as water sources and
for fishing, water transport, recreation, and tourism.
People feel relaxed and at ease around water as denoted
by the expression "water and greenery."
How do Water Public Private Partnerships benefit business
and society?
- Water Conservation - Water is
a precious resource, particularly in areas of poor
supply. Reducing water usage in industry and domestically
can help protect precious supply. Water supply networks
that reduce leakage and ensure a low percentage of
water supply is lost, is essential in ensuring resources
are not wasted. Conservation campaigns can help educate
both business and domestic users on the importance
of water, and reduce overall demand.
- Water Supply – Commercial public
private partnerships to maintain and supply the water
and sewage system have gradually gained in popularity
over the last 20 years. City councils are often faced
with outdated infrastructure, and demand by consumers
for a cleaner and more reliable supply. Private sector
partners can provide the expertise and capital needed
to update the infrastructure and improve supply.
